Whanganui to Opunake

Stopped at park with bird enclosures in Whanganui. Guinea fowl, parrots, canary’s, etc. Drive north along coast with brief stop at Hawera at old water tower.
First of 3 nights to be spent at very nice Kiwi campground on the ocean in Opunake. Black sand beaches. Campground situated in small bay. Really easy to witness the tidal flows in the bay. Great place for learning to surf and bodysurfing as the bottom was all sand and no coral or rocks. Really windy from mid morning to later afternoon. Water too cold for me so Jade dragged Steve in to the water many times to jump waves and try to bodysurf. Town of Opunake just a 15 minute walk up the hill.
